Defending US Open champion Marin Cilic faced the popular Jo-Wilfred Tsonga of France in a showdown between two heavy hitters that would turn into a four-hour slug-fest,Taobao agent much to the delight of the fans in New York.

That set up a fifth and deciding set. The two went toe-to-toe from the baseline, unable to find an edge, until Cilic went for a forehand drop shot that just makes it over the net. Tsonga got to it, but that left an easy winner for the champion.

At match point for the Croat, a big serve put him in control. And the marathon match came to an end when Tsonga hit long, sending the number nine seed Cilic through to the semi-finals.

Vinci defeats Mladenovic 6-3, 5-7, 6-4

On the women's side, 32-year-old Roberta Vinci took on Kristina Mladenovic in the quarter-finals, with both seeking their first US Open semi-final appearance. Mladenovic hit the net to give Vinci a break en route to winning the opening set 6-3.

But the young Frenchwoman fought back and won the second set 7-5.

The decider was also tight, but Vinci gained an edge when Mladenovic sprayed a forehand long and was broken to trail 4-3.

Mladenovic was then in need of some work from the trainer on her right thigh, but was able to resume play. On match point, she dumped her return into the net, so Vinci won 6-4 and is moving on to her first semi-final at the hardcourt tournament.
