Running to raise awareness for autism

And hundreds of people took to the streets last night in Dalian.Taobao agent Among the 800 participants were Winter Olympic figure-skating champions Shen Xue and Zhao Hongbo. The pair were involved in a special event known as 'Running Together' which helps raise awareness in the fight against autism -- an affliction that affects millions here in China.
Amongst the backdrop of downtown Dalian -- hundreds put on their running shoes for a late-summer activity. The participants are trying to make a difference for a special cause in China.
"This event is very meaningful. Our participation can make society be aware of this problem. There are more than 13-million children in China who are autistic, that is really a huge number. We hope to give them an equal chance, helping them grow up to have the same opportunities as other children," Zhao said.
The problem is global, besides the 13-million children diagnosed with the affliction in China, there are more than 67 million kids living with the condition worldwide.
Medics still do not know what causes autism -- so runs like this are essential to help raise awareness.
The event hits close to home for the founder of the event -- as Cui Linna's daughter is autistic, and the former member of the media quit working to help establish the "Running Together" organization.
"Actually my daughter is autistic. She is 9-years-old now. When she was around three, her teacher didn’t allow her to join a kindergarten party, because she felt she would bother the other children and their parents, that deeply affected me. Autism is an illness, it needs the understanding of all of society. From my point of view, I hope to use this running event to make more people know about autistic children. They are not horrible, they are cute and child-like," Cui said.
"We want the children to know they are not alone, besides their mothers and fathers, they have sisters, brothers, uncles and aunts who love them, and who want to play with them," Running Together charity ambassador Dong Bo said.
