The Australian Ballet has long been warmly embraced in China over the years, and now they're back for their eighth visit at the Beijing Dance Festival. They will bring two of their best pieces: a reinterpreted 'Swan Lake', based on a love triangle in Britain's royal family; and a three-part piece entitled 'Mixed Bill'.
Australia's national ballet company has had a long history of international touring since its founding in 1962, but they have a particular affection for China.
"We have performed 37 countries around the world and 87 cities, and China is the country that we have performed in the most. This will be our 8th visit to China in the history of The Australian Ballet. So it's a pleasure to be here," said Libby Christie, Exec. Dir. of The Australian Ballet.
Graeme Murphy's modern take on the classic "Swan Lake" is charged with sensuality and heartbreak. It's Australian Ballet's most performed and most successful work, and has swept the world with ovations and tears in London, Paris, Tokyo, and New York. This will be its first outing in Beijing, with two performance nights this weekend.
The company's other production at the festival, 'Mixed Bill', comprises three parts: "Suite en Blanc", choreographed by maestro Serge Lifar; "Unspoken Dialogues", by Australian Ballet's long-time collaborator Stephen Baynes; and "In the Upper Room", a famous piece by U.S. choreographer Twyla Tharp, with music composed by Philip Glass.China Ebay
After Beijing, the company head to Shanghai for the annual Shanghai International Arts Festival.
