From the architect. Louis Vuitton is a world renowned brand know for it’s commitment to fashion, lifestyle, culture, Art + Architecture. It's not surprising that an innovative concept was envisioned for their South East Asian flagship store. Located at Marina Bay Sands, in Singapore, the project is housed in one of the “Crystal Pavilions” of the mixed-use complex designed by Safdie Architects. The radical design for a stand alone store has become the first of it’s kind, an “Island Maison”. Stepping up to this task, famed interior designer, Peter Marino continues his on going relationship with LVMH to realize this vision. The concept store was to act as a gallery for LV products and embody the feel of high fashion elegance and the nautical aesthetic for which LVMH has become known.

The selected location presented a number of design challenges, the chief of which was control of an over abundance of tropical sun. The "Crystal Pavilion" is an asymmetric steel-framed glass building with irregularly angled facades. This combined with it’s location, one degree north of the equator, the structure receives sun from all sides. To solve this problem, FTL Design Engineering Studio was brought on. The result is a solar shading concept of continuous linear white bands that provide the desired shading, UV protection for the handbags and serves as the backdrop on which for the interior build-out. The shading system covers all interior wall and ceiling elements and calls to mind the sails and masts of a sailboat. Though not strictly nautical, the atmosphere is Marino and LV all the way.

What is your experience with Taobao, the Chinese version of Ebay?

First, taobao is only good in China. I've tried to get stuff shipping here, though they have a overseas taobao service, it took almost 2 months. Taobao agent 

But domestic wise, I think taobao has a much better seller customer service than eBay. My experience with eBay has always been like buying from one person, their private home stash kind of product. But taobao allows their sellers to take full advantage of customized sites, so it's basically a marketplace of online stores. The customer service is crazy, they're on you all the time finalizing your order and making sure you're satisfied. Also some stores offer personal shopper service and talk you through products, suggestions, etc.

Usually if there are things I need from taobao I ask around who's traveling and get them to bring it over here. I can pay with my US credit card with a fairly reasonable service fee which is pretty convenient. 

Now the things I buy are pretty random, mostly event related items like photo props, decorations etc. They're the exact same as the ones in the U.S. which are made in China, but cost so much less even with taking my "courier" out for a nice thank you meal.

That's just my experience. I've heard some horror stories. But I think the important thing is to choose sellers/stores wisely. Rating is very important, those little crown things. Really high ratings often don't mean good stores, I look for the ones that have blue crowns instead of gold crowns. They're more customer friendly and their products are more likely to be hand chosen/small scale/the seller actually goes to buy inventory versus mass produced through factory orders.

I've also noticed the regular taobao has a lot of knock off and straight up fake stuff. Mostly luxury brands. But regular taobao has much cheaper price in consumer products. Tmall has much higher prices, they don't sell knock offs, but they take a huge commission on the seller so I guess that's why the price is so high.

According to Mark Ellwood, author of "Bargain Fever: How To Shop In A Discounted World," there's one problem with that idea: Louis Vuitton products never go on sale.

According to Ellwood, there's a method to the brand's madness.

It's called vertical integration, and it's a practice that dates back to the 1970s, when steel magnate Henri Recamier married into the Vuitton family and became the first outsider to take over the business.

Recamier noticed that retailers who sold Vuitton products were marking up the bags by at least 100%, putting all the profits in their pockets and leaving little money for the manufacturers. Recamier came up with a solution.

From "Bargain Fever":

Nixing that greedy retail middleman — in other words, opening wholly owned stores or controlling concessions — would mean Vuitton could keep that money for itself. So that's what Recamier did.

His move doubled profit margins overnight: As conventional luxury firms remained at the traditional 15 to 20%, his reinvented company hit 40% or more.

Ellwood writes that vertical integration means Vuitton not only owns its own factories, but the company also leases the space it uses for the LV mini boutiques you see on the selling floor of various department stores.

Therefore, Vuitton can control the actual manufacturing of its products (if a certain handbag isn't selling, it can decrease production of that handbag) and it can staff and operate those mini boutiques directly. So LV never sells its products wholesale to a department store, which means the department store can't sell LV's products for a sale price.

Here's Ellwood's simple explanation of why vertical integration led to success for LV:

As Recamier had realized forty years before, the equation for success at full price was simple: Controlling the channel meant you controlled the price. Without a middleman, margins are higher, offering a plumper profit cushion during downturns.
