A win for Djokovic would be his first title in New York since 2011 and his third major of 2015. Federer was seeking his first triumph at Flushing Meadows since 2009.
Federer had 21-20 record against Djokovic.
Because of rain showers, the duo needed to wait three hours before entering the court.
Early on in the first set with Djokovic up a break, Federer chipped and charged on a second serve and put pressure on the world number one, who slipped trying to retrieve a drop volley; he took a tumble and hit his elbow on the court. He lost that game and needed medical attention for a bloody wound.
Still in the first set, the Swiss again went to the net, but the Serb makes him pay, whipping a backhand winner down the line and he broke to go in front 4-3 en route to taking the set.
In the second set, Federer tried a sneak attack by Federer, but Djokovic was up to the task, and his exquisite backhand lob out of the reach of his opponent.
With Djokovic down 5-6 and serving to stay in the set, the two waged a great point from the baseline; the 15-shot rally saw both in control from the baseline until when the 17-time Grand Slam champion unleashed a great backhand winner with pace to take the point and even things at a set each.
In the next set, Djokovic started to take control; on his opponent's serve a return just caught the line, helping him win the point and break Federer to take the set 6-4.
In the fourth set, the world number one was in control, leading 5-2 and serving for the match, but the second seed did not go quietly; he played a drop volley winner to break the Serb and prolong the match.
But Djokovic would not let another opportunity slip away; Federer hit long on match point handing the match to the Serb 6-4, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4.
The championship win is Djokovic’s third major of 2015,English Taobao his first title in New York since 2011, and his 10th overall.
