China’s Search Engine Market Overview in Q2 2015

China’s search engine market in Q2 2015 reached 19.22 billion yuan (US$3.09 billion),Taobao agent with an increase of 25.9% QoQ and 36.9% YoY according to Analysis Research.

In Q2 2015, Baidu accounted for 79.81% of the overall market share by revenues which excluded channels revenue; Google China 10.89%, Sogou 6.34%,Taobao Intermediate and the others 2.96%.

Taobao is promoting the direct sales of fresh agricultural products to Chinese consumers throughout the country on its food vertical chi.taobao.com (chi: eat).
The Taobao promotion that features merchants from nine provinces — Xinjiang, Taobao agent Inner Mongolia, Sichuan, Yunnan, Heilongjiang, Shaanxi, Shanxi, Liaoning and Jilin, offering fresh harvested fruits, rice and seafood to consumers all over China.

100 fishing boats out of Ningbo city will use Taobao to sell their catch from the East China Sea. Seafood will be processed on board vessels before transfer to cold storage facilities for shipping and distribution.
Chinese consumers can pre-order rice from suppliers in China’s rice bowl provinces in the north, delivering them the fresh taste of the first rice harvest. Taobao estimated that this direct-shipping model cuts down on costs such as warehousing, reducing the amount of time it usually takes for a bag of rice to go from field to home.
Some 200 varieties of weighing an estimated 3,000 tons is expected to be sold on Taobao,Taobao Broker according to a Taobao press release.

China Top 10 Jewelery Brands on Taobao/Tmall

China top three jewelry brands by total transaction value on TaobaoTmall were Chow Tai Fook,Taobao agent Chow Sang Sang and Milai according to data from Taobao Mofang.

Alibaba’s three China online retail marketplaces, Taobao, Tmall and Juhuasuan, generated a combined GMV of RMB1,833 billion (US$296 billion) from 279 million active buyers and 8.5 million active sellers in the twelve months ended June 30, 2014 according to Alibaba official press release.

GMV generated from traffic through Juhuasuan is recorded as either Taobao Marketplace GMV or Tmall GMV depending on which of these two marketplaces the transaction is completed. GMV generated from traffic through Juhuasuan was RMB65.6 billion (US$10.6 billion) in the twelve months ended June 30,China Ebay 2014 according to data from Alibaba.

Baidu Revenues Reached US$2.67B in Q2 2015

Baidu reported total revenues of 16.575 billion yuan (US$2.673 billion) for Q2 2015,Taobao agent an increase of 38.3% YoY. Mobile revenue represented 50% of total revenues for Q2 2015.

Baidu’s Online marketing revenues were 16.227 billion yuan (US$2.617 billion), 37.1% increase YoY. Baidu had about 590,000 active online marketing customers in Q2 2015, representing a 20.9% increase YoY and a 12.6% increase QoQ. Revenue per online marketing customer for Q2 2015 was approximately 27,400 yuan (US$4,419).
On July 28th, the stock price of Baidu dropped 15% following the announcement of its unaudited financial results on July 27 2015, which set a record of biggest one-day drop in Baidu’s history since the recovery of the financial crisis.
Baidu expects to generate total revenues ranging from 18.170 billion yuan (US$2.931 billion) to 18.580 billion ($2.997 billion) for the third quarter of 2015, representing a 34.4% to 37.4% year-over-year increase. The earnings per share and other outlooks were lower than expected,English Taobao and Baidu would invest more in order to continue to maintain a high growth rate.


Baidu’s Global Market Share Decreased to 7.52% in June 2015

In June 2015,Taobao agent Google Global still ranked the top by market share of 70.8% in the world’s search engine market with an increase of 2.26% from the previous month. Bing and Yahoo ranked the 2nd and 3rd. Compared with market structure in May, it had some difference in June’s search engine market.

Compared with Baidu’s market share in May, in June, it was replaced by Bing,  English Taobao ranking the 4th. Baidu’s market share decreased from 10.18% to 7.52% in June 2015.


China Top 100 Mobile Apps in July 2015

With rapid development of mobile internetTaobao agent mobile and social features will play more and more important role. Among all the mobile apps in China in July 2015, social platforms like WeChat and QQ ranked first with the monthly average users of 556.48 million and 424.28 million respectively.
Among the top 20 mobile apps, those owned by TencentAlibaba, Baidu and 360 took the majority, especially Tencent. WeChat, QQ, QQ browser, Tencent Video, QQ Music, Tencent News, WeSync and WeSecure took up 40% of top 10 mobile apps. WeChat was the most active social platform with the monthly average users of 556.48 million; Baidu App was the most active mobile search engine with the monthly average users of 190.03 million. In the mobile video market, Tencent, iQIYI and Youku led the market, with fierce competition and close gap of MAUs (monthly active users); and see the top 20 mobile apps in July 2015 below.

Sohu Sogou Revenue Grew by 70% to $119M in Q4 2014

Sohu total revenues were US$477 million, Taobao agentwww.timtao.com up 24% year-over-year and 11% quarter-over-quarter while Sogou, part of Sohu, revenues were US$119 million, up 70% year-over-year and 12% quarter-over-quarter according to Sohu announced financial results.
Sogou’s mobile keyboard is the top Chinese input application on both iPhones and Android phones while mobile search also showed strong momentum.
In 2014, Sogou continued on its rapid growth trajectory upon the smooth integration with Soso, Tencent’s search brand. Sogou now provides a full range of search services for the vast number of Tencent users.
Sogou have deepened  cooperation with Tencent’s WeChat. Following the launch of a unique function that allows Sogou users to search content published by WeChat official accounts, in their latest version of our mobile search App, they added a new feature called “WeChat Headlines“, which surfaces the most popular and breaking news stories being shared on WeChat.
Sogou have seen robust search traffic growth with mobile traffic growing over 150% in the past twelve months.

Sohu Performance Highlights in 2014

  • Total revenues were US$1.7 billion, up 19% year-over-year.
  • Brand advertising revenues were US$541 million, up 26% year-over-year. Of this, revenues of Sohu Media Portal were US$198 million, up 9% year-over-year. Revenues of Sohu Video were US$176 million, up 61% year-over-year.
  • Sogou revenues were US$386 million, up 79% year-over-year.
  • Online game revenues were US$652 million, down 3% year-over-year.
  • GAAP net loss attributable to Sohu.com Inc. was US$171 million or US$4.43 loss per fully-diluted share. Non-GAAP net loss attributable toSohu.com Inc. was US$120 million or US$3.11 loss per fully-diluted share
Total revenues for 2014 were US$1.7 billion, up 19% compared with 2013.
Total online advertising revenues, which include revenues from the brand advertising and search and Web directory businesses for 2014, were US$899 million, up 43% compared with 2013.
Brand advertising revenues for 2014 were US$541 million, up 26% compared with 2013. The year-over-year increase was mainly due to increases in revenues from the online video and real estate advertising businesses. Of this, revenues of Sohu Media Portal were US$198 million, up 9% year-over-year. Revenues of Sohu Video were US$176 million, up 61% year-over-year.
Search and Web directory revenues for 2014 were US$358 million, up 80% compared with 2013. The year-over-year increase was mainly driven by the search business as a result of increases in the number of paid clicks and higher average cost per click.
Online game revenues for 2014 were US$652 million, down 3% compared with 2013. The decrease reflected a decline in revenues from TLBB, following the strategic decision to simplify its gameplay, and from Wartune and DDTank, as both games have now entered a mature phase in China. The decreases were partially offset by the successful launch of a new mobile game, TLBB 3D, and a new MMO,Taobao Broker Fantasy Frontier Online.

The combined MAU of Weixin and WeChat were 600 million, an increase of 37% YoY according to Tencent’s unaudited consolidated results for the second quarter.
Tencent’s total revenues in Q2 2015 were 23,429 million yuan (US$3,832 million), Taobao agent an increase of 19% YoY. Its total revenues in H1 2015were 45,828 million (USD7,496 million1
), an increase of 20% YoY. Tencent’s profit was 7,396 million (USD1,210 million) in Q2 2015, Taobao Broker an increase of 27% YoY; 14,326 million yuan (USD2,343 million) in H1 2015, an increase of 17% YoY.

Taobao's Image Search Engine: Imagine
Last Tuesday, Taobao launched their image search engine Imagine for online shoppers. The idea is simple: if a Chinese netizen sees something she likes and wanted to buy, she can search for that product as long as she has the image of that product.
Users can upload a photo or enter the URL of a photo and specify a product category to conduct search. However, so far it only supports clothes, shoes and women handbags.
As a quick experiment, I found the URL of a Burberry handbag on Google Image search:

Stats of Top Selling Brands on Taobao/Tmall in 18 Categories in Sep 2014 taobao agent www.timtao.com

In September 2014, as top the brand in men’s clothes category on Taobao/ Tmall,English Taobao afs Jeep had an  increased revenue of RMB23 million ($3.7 million) followed by Markfairwhale who had increased by over RMB10 million ($1.62 million) in sales value compared with August according to data of Taobao Mofang.

Among men’s shoes brands, Playboy was the best seller in September. Simier‘s sales value had increased to RMB9.9 million ($1.61 million) and in August, its sales value was RMB4.54 ($0.73 million).

In women’s clothes category, Handu maintained its good performance in September. And Bosideng was in top 10 list while in August; it did not get into top 15.
On Tmall in September, Guciheaven had sales value that exceeded RMB19.82 million ($3.22 million), ranking the best seller, followed by Moolecole and Camel. Compared with August, Belle performed good enough to get into top 10 in September 2014.

In luggage & bag category, Seven Wolves was ranked on top with sales value of RMB24.17 million ($3.03 million), followed by Playboy and Laorentou.
At present, there are not so many international luggage & bag brands on Tmall and with Alibaba IPO, it will attract many international brands to open Tmall flagship store. In April, Burberry opened flagship store on Tmall which will bring changes to luggage & bag market.

In September 2014, Nanjiren‘s sales value exceeded RMB21.92 million ($3.57 million) and it had an increase of RMB10 million ($1.62 million) from the previous month.

On Tmall, Hengyuanxiang had sales value of RMB21.27 million ($3.46 million), ranking top in bedding category, followed by Bejirog and Nanjiren.

Japanese brand Merris was the best seller in Tmall’s baby care category with a total sales value of RMB32.97 million ($5.37 million) in September. Merris is a brand of Kao Corporation which mainly sell products on Tmall flagship store in China.

Chinese brands, Pechoin, Meifubao and Kans are top three cosmetic brands on Tmall in September 2014 whose sales value were all over RMB20 million ($3.28 million) respectively. Estee Lauder, which opened Tmall flagship store in May 2014, did not make it to the best sellers list.

In September, Midea‘s sale value had over RMB100 million ($16,29 million) followed by Haier.

Among top 10 brands in household appliance category on Tmall, Ecovacs and Fmart are specialized in intelligent cleaning robots and Mfresh is in air purifiers. Chinese brand, which has a French name, Salav mainly sells garment steamers on Tmall.

In 3C digital accessory category on Taobao/ Tmall, Samsung ranked top with sales value of RMB167 million ($27.26 million), followed by Apple and Xiaomi in September 2014.

In September 2014, Adidas performed really well with sales value of RMB268 million ($43.76 million) on Taobao/ Tmall. Nike and Li Ning are still popular in sports wear category.

Tmall is an essential online commerce platform for retailers; Costco knew that when they sold 3 tons of Kirkland nuts and nearly 1.5 tons of dried cranberries in just three days. China Ebay Tmall expects to generate RMB 50 billion revenue on Double 11 2014, China’s biggest online shopping day.
